Homeward Bound…

DB Home

So after a few dry days in Sharm with my other half half way around the world back in the UK, I thought I may as well head back home for a bit and spend my time out of the water with him. Especially as there is a slight chance he may need surgery.
As it is, he has had to have his knee drained (hmmm lovely) and we are now just waiting for the results of the scans to come through. All he wants is to be fit for the honeymoon… something we thought would have been a dead cert considering he had his operation way back in August. So fingers crossed, we find out tomorrow what the course of action will be. The surgeon thinks he will be fit for our mid November jaunt, so wish us both well.
As it is, the UK is wet, grey and cold, and we both miss the diving.

So back on dry land for a bit… bummer!
Well, I knew it was on the cards, when I woke up the other day with the tell tale sore throat and sniffles. Right now I have a head full of cotton wool and a nose that’s running like a tap.. hmmm lovely… I guess it was my turn, I think the cold has gone around the dive centre, so I suppose it’s time to bite the bullet and put my feet up for a bit. Guess that also makes it my turn to do a stint in the office too…

10 day guiding marathon!! Woo Hooo…

DB Home

So finally I get a week’s guiding… roll out the bunting ring the bells, fly the flags. Well I guess it is one of those things, and all the new students we have had, will no doubt become the divers that return to do some fun diving in the future. It is just that the summer is THE time to be out on the further reefs, guiding and looking for sharks etc and I think most of us have only had a couple of weeks of it at the most.
Never mind, I have had a good share of those reefs now! My week started gently as usual with a local day, a few familiar faces and a couple of check dives all quite leisurely.
Day two brought with it a flat calm Tiran so we just had to jump on the back of Jackson to see if we could hunt out some remaining hammer heads… no such luck, sadly it was a totally shark-free dive for me, however a couple of the guests did see a reef shark towards the end of the dive, so they are still out there!!!
Then of course it was Ras Mohammed, or we might have headed out to the Dunraven that day (once again I have had a multiple Dunraven week… nearly hit the lucky number three, but got struck with a cold). The week has kind of blurred into a melange of Dunraven dives, Ras Mo and Tiran, with very blurry edges.
At some point in the 10 day run, I succumbed and had to invest in a new wet-suit. After finding that even layering shorties under full suits with both rash vests and hoods, was not doing the trick, I had to give in to it. It is still too early to be in a dry suit, so off I headed to Scubatec down in Old Sharm. And finally I have a suit that really really fits (I truly think that this is a first for me!) and whilst I am not toasty warm, I am not shivering and hypothermic from the moment I enter the water anymore.
Shark and Yolande is still as always stunning, although on one of the visits we had a rampant reverse current meaning we had to do a touch of creative meandering to get around to the wreck itself. Jackfish alley has come into its own a bit this week too… I have taken to spending time with the cleaner shrimps on the pizza anenome (very cute) and am loving the chimney swim through at the moment.
I will say though that this week, for the shark hunters, Tiran was the place to be, however with the president in town for much of the week three dives in the straits themselves was an impossibility. We saw a leopard shark on the end of Woodhouse, a baby white tip on the back of Woodhouse, and yesterday (now the president has returned to his rightful location) were able to see a shark on each of the three dives!!!! I had a flying drift on Thomas for the last of our dives yesterday, and whilst most of us ooohed and aahhhed over a little turtle, two of our guests were coolly admiring another white tipped shark!
Dunraven was cool as usual both times I headed out there, though the stone fish have all decided to shuffle around and appear to have shed their algae coating, so are now even harder to spot! How totally inconsiderate! Neil spotted the first one on our dive there, and I got the second, but that was it… then two days later when I returned on my own, both had moved again and it was one of our guests who spotted the only stone fish of the dive!
Anyway, a good 10 days has come to an end, and Starbucks it is, to check on emails and of course keep DiveBunnie up to date.
